The Downtown Hope Center began over 30 years ago in a garage, fueled by a vision to share the love of God with Anchorage’s homeless. Operating out of a little red house on 4th Avenue, they provided nearly 300 cups of soup each day to homeless and low-income families; in addition, they offered showers and clothing handouts from a yellow A-frame next door. In 2012, they moved into our new facility on 3rd Avenue. Funded primarily by individual donors and churches, they were able to customize the facility to fit the needs of those they serve. In addition to regular services, they expanded their programs to create opportunities for guests to gain experience and marketable job skills. Feed Me Hope Bakery opened its doors in March 2016 to women staying in the shelter. Already, they have seen remarkable transformations take place as hope has been restored to these women. Future plans include a culinary school, barista training, and a food truck for our students to work in. We look forward to what God has in store as we envision a thriving Anchorage community, free of hopelessness.
